About Buddhist Prayer Wheels
Om Mani Padme Hum
Prayer wheels are primarily used by the four major traditions of Tibetan Buddhism: Nyingma, Kagyu, Sakya and Geluh. These four traditions are all part of the Mahayana Vajrayana school and all lead to enlightenment. The mantra Om Mani Padme Hum is placed on the Nano Film. Approximately 10 million mantras are in one square inch.
Tibetan Buddhism Beliefs
Prayer wheels come in many sizes from handheld to many feet tall and wide. They are spun clockwise and are used to accumulate wisdom and merit and to purify negativities, especially around the middle chakras such as the heart and crown. The concept of the prayer wheel is that it is a physical manifestation of the phrase “turning the wheel of Dharma”, which describes the way in which the Buddha taught.
In a September 1, 2022 article from the Santa Cruz Sentinel, Tsering a Buddhist monk from the Vajrayana Institute for Wisdom Culture speaks about a prayer wheel installation in the Santa Cruz California Mountains that is ten feet tall and seven feet in diameter that will hold three quadrillion Om Mani Padme Hum mantras. Tsering says this prayer wheel will help inspire people in their spiritual development.
